Challenges in Translating Arabic Fiqh Texts into Indonesian: Problems of Meaning Equivalence and Their Implications for Legal Understanding
Abstract
This study aims to examine the various challenges involved in translating fiqh texts, analyze issues of semantic equivalence, and explain their implications for the understanding of Islamic law. This study employs a qualitative approach through library research. Data were collected using documentation techniques involving relevant sources, including translation theory books, Arabic linguistics literature, and references on fiqh terminology and Islamic jurisprudence. The collected data were then analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method through the stages of identification, classification, and interpretation of semantic equivalence issues at the lexical, grammatical, terminological, contextual, and conceptual levels. The findings indicate that achieving semantic equivalence in the translation of fiqh texts cannot be accomplished merely through literal word-for-word translation. Rather, it requires an adequate understanding of linguistic structures, legal contexts, and the jurisprudential concepts embedded in the source texts. Translation errors may lead to shifts in meaning, potentially resulting in misunderstandings and incorrect implementation of Islamic legal rulings.
